Read In Guidelines

  • Students read during the regular school day.
  • Students may choose the format of the reading material, i.e. book, ebook, magazine, newspaper, etc.
  • Students read for pleasure.
  • In younger classes, students may be read to. Tabulate time as if each child was reading.
  • Use the Read In Classroom Worksheet to tabulate school results.
  • Designate one person in your school to be the Read In contact. This person will report your schoolwide results.
  • Watch your numbers. Your numbers should make sense. If you have 400 students in your school on the day of the Rockland Read In and you report your students read 120.000 minutes total for the day, that means each of your students read for 5.5 hours in one day. Most schools have a rate of about 2.44 hours for the one-day Rockland Read In.
  • School size will be determined by information from nysed.data.gov.

Tips from Previous Rockland Read In Events

  • Students should select reading before the date of the event.
  • Get your whole school involved. Get support and more students reading.
  • Invite school administrators, local legislators, older students, etc. to read to your students.

Good luck to all our Rockland readers!
